Jessica Ghawi Among 12 Victims of "The Dark Knight Rises' Colorado Shooting; 'She was like a jolt of lightning'

Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster, was among the 12 victims killed in the Colorado shooting at a midnight "The Dark Knight Rises" screening in Aurora.

Ghawi, 24, who also went by the name of Jessica Redfield, was described by her mother as "very easy to fall in love with," according to ABC News.

"She was like a jolt of lighting. We would tease when she would come home for a visit, that she'd walk in the door, it was just automatic chaos because of the energy level that she brought into a room," Sandy Phillips, Jessica Ghawi's mother, said tonight on "20/20."

On Thursday midnight, James Eagen Holmes, 24, opened fire at Century Aurora 16 theater around 12:30 a.m. People in the theater were getting ready to watch the hotly anticipated movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Witnesses described him kicking open the back door of the theater and opening fire with four weapons, one AK-type assault rifle, a shotgun and two handguns, according to CNN. Wearing a bulletproof vest and goggles, he stood at the front of the theater, tossed tear gas into the crowd and starting randomly shooting.

The gunman left 12 people dead and around 50 people injured after opening fire in the Aurora theater. Officials said Holmes acted alone.

The death of Ghawi was a "complete and utter shock, said her brother, Jordan Ghawi, according to Newsday.

He has been using his blog and Twitter account to update what he knew about his sister's condition throughout the day. He also appeared on the Today Show.

Jordan Ghawi said on his website that a man who was with his sister at the theater described the chaos, saying he and Jessica Ghawi dropped to take cover when the gunman first started shooting. Jessica Ghawi was shot in the leg, her brother wrote, describing details relayed to him by a man identified on the blog only as a mutual friend named Brent.

Jessica Ghawi began screaming when she was shot, and the friend tried to calm her and stop the bleeding, according to Jordan Ghawi.

The man was then shot, but he continued attending to Jessica Ghawi's wound before he realized she had stopped screaming, Jordan Ghawi stated. The man said Jessica Ghawi had been shot in the head.

Jordan Ghawi said the friend escaped the theater after being shot twice, but he was expected to survive. Jordan Ghawi praised the man, saying his "actions are nothing but heroic."

According to Newsday, Ghawi moved to Denver from Texas about a year ago. Friends and Colleagues described her as outgoing, smart and witty.

"She was always kind of a sponge as far as how she could be an even better journalist and sports broadcaster," said Peter Burns, a radio sports show host with Mile High Sports Radio in Denver, where Ghawi recently interned.

Recently, Ghawi survived the June 2 Eaton Centre mall shooting in Toronto that killed two people and sent several others to the hospital. She blogged about it under the name Jessica Redfield, saying, "I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders' faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change. I was reminded that we don't know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath."

"My sister is a fighter... she's listened to her heart," Jordan Ghawi said in an interview with KUSA9. "I want people to remember that heart and remember the good things that she's done; remember that smile and what her possibilities, what her prospectives, what she could have done in the future.

"This isn't about polarizing debate or politicizing an event. This is a celebration of these who have been wounded or killed in these attacks. It's time that we focus on that and attempt to move forward," Ghawi added.

People that knew Jessica Ghawi created a facebook page "Remembering Jessica Redfield (Ghawi)."

Also among the 12 that died was Alex Sullivan. According to Newsday, he planned a weekend of fun; he planned to ring in his 27th birthday with friends at the special midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises," and then celebrate his first wedding anniversary on Sunday.

Late Friday, Sullivan's family confirmed that police told them he was among those killed.

"He was a very, very good young man," said Sullivan's uncle, Joe Loewenguth. "He always had a smile, always made you laugh. He had a little bit of comic in him. Witty, smart. He was loving, had a big heart."

Micayla Medek, 23, was also among the dead, her father's cousin, Anita Busch, told the Associated Press.

Busch said the news, while heartbreaking, was a relief for the family after an agonizing day of waiting for news.

"I hope this evil act ... doesn't shake people's faith in God," she said.

According to Newsday, President Barack Obama said he was saddened by the "horrific and tragic shooting," pledging that his administration was "committed to bringing whoever was responsible to justice, ensuring the safety of our people, and caring for those who have been wounded."
