'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Movie Updates: 'Mockingjay' Will be Split Into Two Films

Lionsgate confirmed speculations that "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" will be split into two movies, just like other popular films "Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" and "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows."

The "Mockingjay" is the third book in Suzanne Collin's Bestsellers trilogy. The first film is set to release November 21, 2014. The second part will release November 20, 2015, according to the Chicago Tribune. Lionsgate made the announcement on Tuesday.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Lionsgate executives began indicating last year during calls with Wall Street analysts that the studio would split "Mockingjay" into two films following the strategy employed for the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises. The final book focuses on the Katniss Everdeen character being convinced to become "The Mockingjay" as a symbol of the rebellion against the rulers of a post-apocalyptic North America.

Doing so would not only allow the depth of the author's books to be given justice on the big screen, but also provide cast stars Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark), and Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen) with enough time to film the movie, according to the Examiner. The move would also act as a major increase to the series' overall financial success over time as well, reported money analysts from Wall Street.

"The Hunger Games," the first movie in the trilogy, opened March 23 and has grossed nearly $680 million worldwide, according to the Chicago Tribune.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," the second film adaption in the trilogy, is set to release in November 2013 with director Francis Lawrence.

Jena Malone was recently confirmed to play the role of Johanna Mason, a character in the book who has a snide personality, wits and she gets physical some scenes in the book. Her first appearance in the book is when she strips out of her tribute costume in an effort to make Katniss uncomfortable. She is also said to be gifted with "the wicked ability to murder." She wins her games by pretending to be weak and then picking off the other tributes. Malone will probably play Mason in the "Mockingjay" films.

Also recently, Lionsgate announced last week Monday that the Philip Seymour Hoffman will play Plutarch Heavensbee in "Catching Fire" in a press release. The Oscar winner reportedly said yes to the role of Heavensbee, who takes over as Head Gamemaker after the murder of Seneca Crane, which took place in the first "Hunger Games" film.
