Earlier this week, we reported on a writer who was shot while traveling around the country to document the kindness of people for a photographic memoir he was working on. As it turns out the details of the ironic incident were fabricated by a publicity hungry man who was behind his own shooting.
Bizarre publicity indeed but it did work for a couple of days until Ray Dolin, 39, admitted on Thursday night that he shot himself for self-promotion.
The charges against the man who was arrested for the shooting, Lloyd Christopher Danielson III, 52, were dropped. However, he remains in custody for driving under the influence.
The incident is still under investigation so police were reluctant to release more details on the case. Yet, prior to the confession, Dolin spoke to reporters durning a press release explaining how the shooting happened. "He came up, pulls up at a normal speed, stops, points, shoots and drives off. ... I did not get a good description."
Sherry Alverson, the woman who stopped to help Dolin spoke to the Associated Press and said that there was little about Dolin that made her suspicious. She said she knew he was hurt and just wanted to help him.
"He had blood down his arms, all over his clothes and he was bleeding and shivering and shaky," Alveson said of her initial encounter with Dolin. "I wasn't going to leave him sitting there."
Police said they may press charges against Ray Dolin though none have yet to be filed.
