As if her obsession for selfies isn't already stressed enough, Kim Kardashian compiles thousands of her photos into one convenient book titled "Selfish," which was published by Rizzoli New York back in April. Unfortunately, the book didn't sell as well as it was expected.
Radar Online gathered stats from Nielsen Bookscan to know how many of the reality star's fans went pick up her $19.95 selfie collection. The site discovered that only 32,000 copies of the book, which had 1200 selfies of the celeb squirrelled, were only sold.
According to the site, this figure only represents 0.8% of Kardashian's Instagram followers, which are over 41 million. If the star's venture into print proved something, Radar Online says it is the fact that popularity on social media doesn't guarantee anything, in this case, making a selfie book a hit.
Radar Online says that "Selfish" doesn't look so bad when compared to Kim's younger sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner's sci-fi novel titled "Rebels: City of Indra," which only sold 13,000 copies.
In response to the site's findings, Rizzoli New York released a statement both admitting and refuting the assertions of the publication. The statement read:
"The Bookscan number is not inaccurate but it represents a small segment of our sales overall, which are very strong in non-bookstore specialty retailers, and international sales, neither of which report to Bookscan. The book is, in fact, a significant success story as a benchmark of the phenomenon of self-portrait in the digital age."
Indeed, the publisher wasn't blabbing and "flop" isn't a fitting word to use when talking about "Selfish" down under. According to SMH, Kardashian's 352-page "vanity project" as the site called it, was actually a hit in Australia.
Stats acquired by Fairfax showed that the book joined the ranks of classics such as "1984" by George Orwell in Dymocks' bestsellers list. Hardie Grant, the book's producer for Australia, reveals that the demand was so high they found it very difficult to keep up.
"We sold out of our initial print run in Australia almost immediately, driven by her profile, the book publicity both here and abroad and her amazing social media presence," a spokeswoman from the publisher told SMH.
The abovementioned publication also reports that Kardashian's "Selfish" also made it to the USA Today's bestseller list. "Selfish" was originally Kardashian's private gift for her husband Kanye West. It included intimate and revealing photos of the reality star.
