"Don't Forget,God Bless Our Troops," a new book by Jill Biden, wife of vice president Joe Biden, has written a children's book for young people who have military families. The book came out in anticipation of "Flag Day," the holiday commemorated on July 14th every year in memory and tribute to the 2.2. million troops in the military. The holiday also celebrates the adopotion of the U.S. flag in 1977.
Biden wrote the book because of her 5-year-old grand-daughter, Natalie, who has had to deal with her father's absence. Biden's son is in the Delaware National guard and served in Iraq. The story is told through Natalie's eyes and she offered her impressions and assistance on the book.
"Be brave, Natalie," is the main line of the story, which is said to her as she watches her father deploy, prays for him in church and chats with him on Skype.
"We all would pretend that nothing was wrong," the wife of Vice President Biden said of the family gatherings once her son was deployed to Iraq. Adding that the main reason she wrote the book is so that kids don't feel so alone and know there are other kids who are in the same boat.
The book is illustrated by Raul Colon in a realistic yet colorful style.
Natalies' father ends up returning but Biden wrote this for the many children whose parent does not return. The book is also meant to offer resources to military families and so includes different services that are available to veterans and the family members of the men and women serving our country.
Biden writes, "There is a role for each and every one of us in supporting military families and particularly military children."
