Harper Collins, George RR Martin's publisher, knows that not all "Game of Thrones" fans have read the books where the HBO hit series was inspired, and that these individuals may or may not want to delve into the world page by page and through the written word.
This is why the company decided to develop an app that will nonetheless broaden non-readers' knowledge on the world of Westeros. With the small screen too small to fit everything as detailed in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series and with viewers wanting more, this app serves as a "bridge product."
According to The Bookseller, users can input in the "Game of Thrones" app which storyline they are on the show. The app will provide them over 40 extracts from across the novels that detail on the scenes under the storyline that the user already watched. These extracts take five to 25 minutes to gorge.
Quoting Harper Collins, the abovementioned site says that these selection of extracts "are designed to allow new readers to relive iconic moments from the show, while getting a taste of George RR Martin's writing."
According to Entertainment Weekly, the app will only be available to fans in the UK with iOS devices. The Bookseller says those who live outside the US, Canada and the Philippines can get it for free but there's no word if it will ever be available in these regions.
The "Game of Thrones" app was requested to Harper Collins by fans who want to know more about Westeros and the characters in it without actually reading about it in "A Song of Ice and Fire," which now has five meaty tomes. This is where it all started.
"HarperCollins is committed to building innovative products that serve a clear user need and we're delighted we've found a seamless way for fans of the TV series to get into the rich world of the books," Harper Collins product director Dave Lee said via The Bookseller.
"We are thrilled to be able to offer this new way into the books, and to enable TV fans to discover how much they have to look forward to from the reading experience," Harper Voyager (Harper Collins Australian arm) publishing director Jane Johnson added.
Harper Collins will continuously update the app as the show progresses and as the book series gets more volumes. The "Game of Thrones" app will also integrate "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," a prequel to "Game of Thrones" set for release on October.
