The CW and CBS Studios are taking the "Little Women" to a modern spin when they come back to television, Deadline reports. The collaborators are making a series out of the celebrated novel written by Louisa May Alcott, with production already underway.
Alexis Jolly crafted the classic story to thrive in a dystopian world, with the main characters in the book namely Jo, Meg, Beth and Amy now portrayed as "disparate, half-sisters" who try to stay alive in the midst of an inconceivable machination forming in a dystopic Philadelphia.
In order to do that to survive, the girls are challenged to do the only thing they haven't thought of and always deemed impossible doing - teaming up. In the "hyper-stylized, gritty" series, the unlikely band of three will be hurled in a brand new adventure.
As it was described to possess elements "far beyond anything they have ever imagined," Vulture says that anything can happen in this new adaptation. Lauren can be turned into a zombie and Professor Bhaer may turn out to be an actual bear, quips the site.
There's no word on which stars will become the new "Little Women," although Deadline mentions that when the project was started last fall, Natascha McElhone's name was being tossed around. It remains to be seen if she's still attached since Jordan Roberts, who was supposed to write, is now out.
As the above-mentioned publication points out, The CW's adaptation of "Little Women" is just one of the many others that hit the screen, big or small, over the years. Its predecessor was aired back in 1994. This one starred Winona Ryder, Susan Sarandon, Kirsten Dunst and Christian Bale.
Before that, a 1978 version was headlined by Meredith Baxter, Elizabeth Taylor in 1949 and Katharine Hepburn as the pioneering Little Woman, with the adaptation dating back to 1933. An animated series retelling of the book was also telecast in 1981.
As per TV Line, the original "Little Women" as how Alcott told it followed the Marsh sisters and their mother as they struggle to survive during Civil War, with their man of the house serving as chaplain. Readers followed the girls into their adulthood with tons of adventures that helped them get there.
"NCIS" star Michael Weatherly is attached to the project as a producer. The actor's company Solar Drive Productions will be involved in the series. As for Jolly, who is known for his work in Amazon's "Tiger, Tiger" and "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood," will also serve as an executive producer.
