Transgender Writers Let Preschool Book Readers Decide Main Character's Gender

A pair of transgender rights campaigners have found a very creative and inspiring way to put across the message of equality all the way to the youngest of future generations. This is through a book whose main character's gender is exclusively up to what young readers decide it would be, The Independent reports.

Written by Sarah Savage and illustrated by Fox Fisher, the book titled "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?" follows the life of a young protagonist named Tiny, who is as fond of playing as a fairy as much as playing as a mighty knight and even a football player.

In a new school, Tiny is tormented by other students who bantered "You're not a he or a she, you're an it." In a bid to eliminate such antiquated pigeon-holes and labels, Savage touts that the book is the first of its kind to give readers the full discretion on who they want the hero to be.

"Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?" was written primarily for pre-schoolers to seven-year-olds. Savage believes that it should be in the possession of all primary schools across the country to give parents and instructors an opportunity to understand and talk about gender identity.

However, the author explains that "this book is not just for children who may be gender variant." She explains that she wrote the book "with everyone in mind in the hope of breaking down these outdated ideas of what it means to be a person living in 21st-century society."

Meanwhile, counselling psychologist Dr. Joanna O'Sullivan believes that "Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?" will let the young readers identify themselves with Tiny, adding that it can significantly help them "understand the world and their place in it."

She also says that this shouldn't be something strange in this day and time. This is what Savage thinks too. Fisher stresses that despite the larger acceptance the trans community has been so far enjoying, cases of suicide and self-harm still abound. This is where their creation comes in.

"The main message is about identity and that you can be whoever you want to be. If a child feels they don't identify with being a boy or a girl there is this wonderful space in the middle that they can be in," Savage explains.

"There is no pressure to identity with one or the other. It's about empowering children to express themselves in a way that they feel represents them," she went on to say. Savage has undergone a transition when she was 29. Since then, she has been an inspiration to other trans people.

"Are You a Boy or Are You a Girl?" started as a Kickstarter campaign back in September last year. It earned 377 backers and raised £5,540 by November. Two months later, Savage previewed the artwork.
