The first English-subtitled trailer for "Attack on Titan: Part 1" live-action film has been released by Funimation Entertainment. The thrilling three-minute clip made known how petrifying and deadly Titans can be but also emphasized how solid humanity's determination to take them all out is.
In the trailer [check it out below], the flesh-eating giants breached the same walls they drove humanity into hiding. There, they satisfied their hunger and lack of remorse, with each person either on the run, trying to protect their loved ones or succumbing to their horrible fate as the world gives in to the Titans' domination.
According to Comic Book Resources, Funimation Entertainment has acquired the North American rights of the highly-anticipated two-part live-action film. Together with Tohi Co, the company recently organized the world premiere of the first film last July 14 at the Egyptian Theater in Los Angeles, which is weeks ahead before its Japan release on August 1.
The "Attack on Titan" live-action films follows the story of Eren Jaeger, a boy who lost his family as the Titans rose to power. Alone and hell-bent with revenge, he joins the military to eliminate the Titans before they themselves get obliterated by them, even if it is the most dangerous undertaking to do.
The two-part silver screen retelling is based on the widely popular manga created of the same name created by Hajime Isayama, which follows what's left of mankind, who will be proven wrong about how the three concrete walls they retreated to were deemed impermeable by Titans.
According to IGN, there will be certain elements from the manga that will be changed for the live-action "Attack on Titan" movies. One of which is the absence of Levi, which is compensated by the addition of seven new characters.
As very quickly glimpsed in the trailer, there was also a moment where Eren and Mikasa kissed. When this scene was first previewed in a previous trailer for the flick, Kotaku reports that fans weren't happy about the injection of romance.
The site adds that this didn't exist, at least in the original universe that Isayama created. It even mentioned that fans are worried about the film's big departure from the source material, adding that the love story is simply for netting a bigger audience.
"Attack on Titan" is a bestselling manga series. It is so popular that it spawned an anime series whose second season is now in the works. As for the live-action films, Asahi Shimbun is reporting that a three-episode companion mini-series will stream via dTV on August 15.
"Attack on Titan: Part 1" will be out in Japan on August 1. U.S. fans will get to see it this fall. The second part titled "Attack on Titan: End of the World" will be released in Japan on September 15, but there's no word on its US outing yet.
