What appears to be a "search and replace" mistake by Barnes and Nobles or the e-book publisher of "War and Peace" epitomizes a modern day feud of rivals, a digital prank gone terribly wrong or an inadvertent but comical mistake, depending on how you look at it.
As the story has been reported, blogger Philip Howard was reading his copy of the canonical book by Leo Tolstoy on his Nooke-reader, a product of Barnes and Noble, when he recognized not one but several incorrect uses of the word, "nook" and later he went on to observe that the word was being used in place of the word "kindle."
Howard writes in his blog post, "As I was reading, I came across this sentence: "It was as if a light had been Nookd in a carved and painted lantern...." Thinking this was simply a glitch in the software, I ignored the intrusive word and continued reading. Some pages later I encountered the rogue word again. With my third encounter I decided to retrieve my hard cover book and find the original (well, the translated) text."
The original text is: "It was as if a light had been kindled in a carved and painted lantern...."
If you don't get what's going on here, let's spell it out in layman terms. Barnes and Noble's competitor in the e-book market is Amazon's formidable e-book reader, Kindle.
According to a TIME article by Tim Newcomb, he writes, "a self-proclaimed Nook engineer spoke out online saying that this isn't some backroom Barnes & Noble gimmick, but rather likely the work of a careless publisher. The Nook software doesn't change publishers' text; they leave that to the publisher. So, the most likely explanation of the Kindle-for-Nook exchange is that Superior Formatting Publishing took its Kindle version of the book and inputted it into Nook-friendly software. During the process, to market and advertise the product and company properly, it ran a find and replace on all "Kindle" references, making them Nook-ready."
No word as of reporting, on what will be done to rectify this mistake.
