There's still a long way to go before "The Walking Dead" season 6 limps into the small screen. Good thing San Diego Comic-Con is coming up. On AMC's agenda is the showing of the trailer for the upcoming season, which is, by the way, set to premiere in October.
Fans wouldn't have to wait for the occasion to get a scoop of what's to come. Showrunner Scott Gimple recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to give a preview of Rick and the group's future, which was revealed to include more characters and backstories.
"The Walking Dead" season 6, is, for the most part, staying true to Robert Kirkman's comic books to which the hit AMC series was based. He tells the site that "there are other people that we're going to see throughout the season from the comics, and I'm excited for people to see it."
He provided no clue on who will those be, but as Comicbook writes, the new season will feature a character from the comics named Heath, who "Straight Outta Compton" star Corey Hawkins will play. Gimple said to Entertainment Weekly that the actor "dove in with both feet" in essaying the role.
There are many more aside from Heath, but Gimple chose to keep his lips tight. He did say that there will be "a few minor remixes, but some direct stuff from the comic as well, as far as these characters go."
Bloody Disgusting notes that although "The Walking Dead" is establishing its own timeline, season 6 of the post-apocalyptic series will serve as the intersection of both the adaptation and the comics.
In the same article from Entertainment Weekly, Gimple explained that the first half of the season will function "almost as a prequel to some direct comic stuff in the second half of the season."
"I think there's a way that Robert did some of the story that we're reaching that had a real past to it, where people are referring to some things in the past in the comic. And we're able to portray some of that backstory in some ways that you didn't get to see in the comic," Gimple revealed.
When "The Walking Dead" season 6 begins, the people of Alexandria will still wrestle with trusting Rick, who pulled the trigger on one of their neighbor he deemed a threat.
Although Gimple says that the folks within the walled community were always poised to become more united, Morgan's complete disagreement on how Rick does things will be the root of a new conflict.
"The Walking Dead" season 6 premieres October.
