First time authors with no name recognition are not the only ones taking advantage of self-publishing. Bestselling author, Dave Eggars will be self-publishing his next book, "A Hologram For the King" under McSweeney's, the San-Francisco based publishing company  that he founded.

Eggars who wrote the Pulitzer nominated memoir, "A Hearbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," which received tremendous commercial and literary success, has made Saudia Arabia the scene of his new novel. "A Hologram For the King" is about an American business man living there as an expat and fretting about how he can convince King Abdullah that his firm should be the one to provide information technology for the new city he is developing.  Meanwhile, he is also worried sick over how he will pay his daughter's college tuition and fight the impeding foreclosure of his home. 

In an interview with the online magazine The Rumpus, Eggars said his inspiration for the book came from hearing about a business trip his brother took to Saudia Arabia. "He told me about these cities that King Abdullah is trying to construct from scratch, these centers of education and manufacturing and other catalysts for a post-oil economy. I was fascinated by the idea of American businesspeople coming to these nascent cities in the desert, trying to get in on the ground floor. That was the start of it at least, and it gelled with some ideas I was having about this aging businessman who's painted himself into a corner."

An advocate for independent bookstores and supporting budding writers, Eggars founded McSweeney's, a bookstore and publishing house, in 1998. Apart from the hundreds of books he has published via McSweeney's, Eggars also publishes literary journals, a pop culture website, and a food journal amongst other publications. McSweeney's has been the launch pad for many new writers but it has also published well-established authors such as Joyce Carol Oats and Stephen King.
