Michael Morpurgo, the prolific author of "War Horse" and 120 other books, has another story that he could write based on his love affair with his wife.
The story would be both heartbreaking and heartwarming just like "War Horse." Also like the movie, it would make for a wonderful film. That story is of how he met his wife, Clare, on a beach in 1962 and despite opposition from both sets of parents, they went on to marry and raise three children. Now Morpurgo wants to remarry his wife 50 years after they first wed in a secret ceremony at an office registry in England.
After meeting when they were in their teens, they fell in love quickly and Mrs. Morpurgo became pregnant. The out-of-wedlock pregnancy and the fact that Mrs. Morpurgo's father, Sir Allen Lane, the founder of Penguin Books, thought Mr. Morpugo was a gold digger made for a dismal wedding with disapproving parents. In fact, the two were forced to marry as quickly as possible to hide that Ms. Morpurgo had gotten pregnant by engaging in pre-marital sex.
The wedding, which is planned for June 28 next year, is a do-over chance for the couple who are still very much in love five decades after first laying eyes on each other while vacationing in Greece. In a new biography, "Michael Morpurgo: War Child to War Horse," the author tells the biographer, Maggie Fergusson, that he was "bowled over" when he first saw Clare in "an amazing green bathing costume with a very low back."
In addition to having authored more than 100 books, Morpurgo is also an accomplished playwright, poet and librettist. He has won countless awards for his work and he is a stalwart advocate for children's education and libraries.
