When producers decided to develop "Extant" with "X-Men" actress Halle Berry, they already had season two in mind. This is what executive producer and creator, Mickey Fisher, believes will be the series' ticket to constant renewals and a wide-ranging viewership.
"We wanted to launch this season in a way that new viewers could jump right in with Season 2. You don't have to have seen the whole Season 1 or any of Season 1," Fisher revealed to tv.com. [Spoiler Alert!]
The space-age thriller follows an astronaut named Molly Woods, portrayed by Berry, who embarks on a space mission only to return to Earth pregnant with an extraterrestrial baby. We Got This Covered reviews that "Extant" season two will cement what was established in the pilot season by playing it over again.
This is exactly what Fisher is planning to do: welcome new fans to the fold. "Within the first couple minutes of this episode, you'll be up to speed on everything. We really wanted to do that as a way to invite new viewers into the show for this season," the showrunner also said to tv.com.
Finally, Fisher describes the new season of the science fiction thriller "a little edgier, a little sexier," than the first one and "certainly action-packed," comparing it to a novel with the show's expanding world "moving on to the next phase, the next bit of storytelling."
"Extant" season two also introduces a new character on the block, and, possibly, a new love interest for Molly: a freelance cop named JD played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The character considers aliens and androids something that are "way beyond JD's level of thinking;" thus, dismissing Molly as a madcap.
Speaking to Variety, Morgan says that JD is somewhat made to be the "edge" and "sense of humor" to the show. In the season, JD and Molly will be "getting to know each other under these extreme circumstances."
"We've got sparks flying all over the place and we'll see where that goes," he added.
This is what Berry is also excited about the season, something that fans should look forward to as well. This is because, the star reveals to CBS News, the instant chemistry shared by Morgan's character, and hers will not only be felt on screen. Folks on the set surely feel it too even when the camera stops rolling.
"Put it this way: Our crew sometimes gets very annoyed with us, because we just giggle a lot, laugh through takes, and we have found a really good way to have fun," Berry said. As a matter of fact, JD and Molly will hit it off "immediately."
"Extant" season two will be a reset to the story, as International Business Times writes, and Morgan's perspective on the outrageous extraterrestrial goings-on is something refreshing. According to Yahoo, there will be a time jump of several months when the season returns.
The show premiered yesterday and it isn't too late to catch up.
