"Magic Mike XXL," the long pursued follow-up to the Channing Tatum-starrer released back in 2012, is now sexy-dancing its way to the big screen. Those who are perched to see some steamy dance moves and a group of toned, sweaty guys boasting nice pecs and abs are in for a treat.
Three years have passed. Mike is still a sexy beast, not on stage, but in his custom furniture business. But that only applies to the titular character because the comedy-drama movie, once again, knocked up impressed "oohs," swooning and enamoring the moviegoers.
Those preparing to see the film are in for a potboiler that's chock-full of sexual innuendos, pelvic thrusts, joyrides and not-so-many stripper poles. According to NY Post, "Magic Mike XXL" wins for its rib-tickling dances and unpretentious fun. This is what differentiates it from the original.
Vanity Fair comments that the dancing in the film was almost made to provoke a light-hearted tone as opposed to "Magic Mike," which functioned under a particularly heavy atmosphere. This weight doesn't only come from the casts' popping muscles.
In fact, Time understands that underneath all the dancing is a man struggling to establish a better life free from the drug world, from being somebody's underling and from the stripper stage, which Tatum's character is working hard for in "Magic Mike XXL."
What Vanity Fair noticed is that it almost feels like all the fun moments were cherry-picked and thrown into the movie, which, in turn, is filled with road trips, retreats and athletic, fat-free dance outbursts. In fact, "Magic Mike XXL" goes fully unclouded and laid-back.
The only thing Mike had to worry about is not getting to hang out with his buddies as much as he previously did, which he didn't get to patch for long in "Magic Mike XXL."
With Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer out of the picture, the boys – Matt Bomer, Adam Rodriguez, and Joe Manganiello – turn to Mike, who now plays with carpentry tools in Tampa. With his business struggling, the boys effortlessly got him to join the ride.
New York Times says that humor still runs even in the moments when there isn't much of energy and music, which the movie featured copiously. As far as the cast members go, Tatum still has the charm that lights up the whole movie. The site special-mentioned Donald Glover for his crazy antics that made the flick brighter.
"Magic Mike XXL" is in theaters starting today.
