It is indeed a glorious day for "Steven Universe" fanatics who virtually live a life full of dreams and colors in the wonderful world of the Crystal Gems. A graphic novel inspired by the popular Cartoon Network series created by Rebecca Sugar is currently in development and Los Angeles Times exclusively unveiled the cover.
The cover art for the graphic novel titled "Steven Universe: Too Cool for School," which can be viewed here, was wonderfully crafted by Rosemary Valero-O'Connell. It shows the ever-adorable Steven looking into the world while caught in the reverie of its splendor and the fun the half-human kid is bound to experience.
The graphic novel chronicles the story of Steven and Connie as the former comes with the latter to school one day. Developed by "Steven Universe" supervising director Ian Jones-Quartey, the story will reveal, as LA Times hinted, why Steven doesn't go to school with the regular humans.
Noticeably, the cover is set in a classroom, which LA Times revealed, is housed by a school where only regular humans attend. It is through this narrative that the mystery of Steven not going to school with the regular kids will be brought up and explored.
"Steven's always been taught by the Gems, but in this original graphic novel, he goes to school for the first time and there's dodgeball, teachers and food fights to worry about," Watters explained. "You can also look forward to the kindness and heart at the core of every iteration of 'Steven Universe.'"
"Steven Universe: Too Cool For School" is "a great starting point" for fans who are just starting to explore Steven's world, says the editor, who worked closely with Sugar and Jones-Quartey for the book.
Watters also reiterated what the cartoon is all about, revealing that it is one of her "favorite shows on the air right now, period."
"It touches me deeply," Watters went on to say. "Steven Universe is not only a beautifully crafted show, it's an all-ages show that isn't afraid to deeply explore 'sensitive' topics in a way that is optimistic, kind and pulls no punches," Shannon Watters, who serves as the editor of the graphic novel, said of the series according to LA Times.
"Steven Universe: Too Cool For School" is written by Jeremy Sorese and illustrated by Coleman Engle. It will be published by Boom Studios via its all-ages imprint KaBoom. It will be released in December and will be the first among the graphic novels planned to be released annually.
In other related news, the last five episodes of "Steven Universe" season 2 were packed into one colorful screen fest in "Stevenbomb 2.0." IDigital Times listed four of the biggest revelations from the episodes. The series returns for episode 14 on Jul. 13.
