Kentucky senator Rand Paul has some explaining to do. His new book, "Taking a Stand: Moving Beyond Partisan Politics to Unite America," was found to contain wrong information - some of which have been cited from questionable sources, BuzzFeed reports.
The new book, released yesterday, already received flak from the media especially after erroneous information was found. According to the book, six people died during the Benghazi attack by the U.S. in 2012. However, the numbers did not add up since original reports stated that only four people died including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens.
"I believe judgment day for Benghazi is also at hand when the secretary of state answers a question concerning the murders of six Americans, including an American ambassador, by saying, 'What difference, at this point, does it make?' I think that's a pretty clear indication that it's time for that person to go. It's 3 a.m., Mrs. Clinton. The phone is ringing. The American people deserve to know why you never bothered to answer it," he wrote, according to via BuzzFeed.
According to MSNBC, the book also misquoted Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The report said that Clinton never said any of those things in relation to the deaths incurred by the attack. The book's publisher already promised to correct these mistakes in the next batch of printing.
In a separate report by BuzzFeed, it stated that the book also made use of information from questionable or unverified sources. The report cited a passage from Paul's book, saying, "A story in Forbes magazine said that President Obama, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and other high-ranking officials watched a live video feed of the attack from a drone that hovered overhead, and did nothing." However, the source of his information is an opinion column that appeared in the said magazine, and no evidence was found to support his claim.
All these observations on Paul's new book had the media speculating whether the book was really written by the senator himself. Aside from his senatorial chair, Paul is hailed as a prolific writer. He published four books since he began his office, and his fifth book is yet to be released. MSNBC questions how Paul is able to juggle writing full-length books with his duties as Kentucky senator.
The controversy over his new book contributes to Paul's image as the "new Republican." He often goes against the usual Republican stance, such as the issues on environment, wherein Republicans have been known to be less empathetic with, CNN reports.
