Perhaps on the heels of the success of dating advice books such as "He's Just Not That Into You" and "Think Like a Man, Tracy McMillan a writer for Mad Men and the most read blog post on Huffington Post ever, has written a book for all the single ladies looking to get married. This book is for all the women who dream of walking down the aisle but for one reason or another can't seem to find themselve in the white gown they've always dreamed of. But the difference with this book and the recent popular dating books is that this is written by a woman for other women.
McMillan is a straight shooter with the advice she slings out with a the kind of directness that you only want to hear from your closest girlfriend. She says she is qualified to dish out the advice after having been married three times and learning what not to do because of her own failures. One of the cardinal rules she offers is to not kid oneself into thinking that a guy who is not interested in being in a relationship will somehow be so taken by you that he will change his mind and propose to you. She adds that women who want to get married and are still single are most likely delusional in their approach.
A paragraph from her intro includes the following:
"The premise here is that marriage is about love. Not the kind of love where you feel like you're starring in a really amazing Banana Republic commercial. The kind where you take a risk, put your ego aside, let down your defenses, and decide to love a man for who he is, not what you want from him - even if what you want from him is to love him. (And, of course, marriage and a baby.)
It's as simple as this: If you're not married and you want to be, you need to express more love. Not get more love. Express it. Feel it. Be it. See it everywhere."
In a humorous interlude, she also talks about her fourteen-year old son who she says she often wants to invite her single friends to study because most men are still stuck in the mind-set of a 14-year-old boy.
Like Madonna said-and I know this is cheesy-it's about opening your heart.
