From the creator of the iconic characters in "Sex and the City" comes a new novel that will be a surefire hit among her fans. Candace Bushnell's upcoming novel, "Killing Monica," is set to debut on June 23.
It seems that Bushnell, 56, draws inspiration from her successful writing career in her latest book. "Killing Monica" follows Pandy "PJ" Wallis, a renowned author of a series of novels that spawned big-screen blockbuster hits. Problems arise when PJ wants to write about something more serious compared to her sexy "Monica" novels but her publisher insists that the author continues to ride the Monica fame. Amidst her crumbling marriage with a failed restaurateur, PJ longs to disappear from it all. After a boathouse accident, PJ sees an opportunity to escape her present situation and reinvent herself with the help of her former best friend.
In "Killing Monica", Bushnell delves into the true meaning of identity and second chances as the novel's main character wades through pop culture, celebrity-worshipping society, gossip and the travails of being famous. With her trademark wit and humor, coupled with her typical scandalous sex tales, "Killing Monica" has fans of the author excited for the release of the book.
Incidentally, readers already had their sneak peek of the book way before its release when the first 50 pages of the novel were leaked by a certain 'Guccifer,' a hacker who victimized high-profile personalities in the past such as George Bush and Hillary Clinton, Gawker reports. The hacker made its way through Bushnell's official Twitter account and posted a link to the book, saying, "Here you can read my last book 'killing monica' first 50 pages; enjoy as long as you can! (sic)" The link leads to screenshots of the pages of the book, which Bushnell herself sends to her publisher via email, along with other personal messages and photos.
The author appeared to be in distraught by the leak. However, the leak may actually help her with the release of "Killing Monica", according to Digital Book Publishing. Meanwhile, excerpts from "Killing Monica" is available for download via iTunes for free in lieu of this year's Book Con scheduled on May 30 to 31 in New York City.
The book's hardcover and audiobook version will be released in its entirety on June 23 and are already available for pre-order in Amazon. Renowned voice-over talent, Therese Plummer, narrated the audiobook. Fans of the author could catch the launch at the Tuscan Book Club in the suburbs of Illinois on June 27.
