A rugged and more casual-looking Superman was revealed on the cover of the upcoming Action Comics #41, the Nerdist reports. The cover, which was first shown in March, features Superman without his usual costume that consists of the iconic red cape and tights. Rather, the superhero wore a simpler attire -- a blue shirt with his "S" logo against a black backdrop and blue jeans, while clenching his two fists in what appears to be the last shreds of his cape.
Cosmic Book News reports that several pages from the upcoming issue shows how The Man of Steel lost most his superhero costume after an epic battle in the arctic mountains of Alaska. But when Superman knocks at The Fortress of Solitude after the fight, the bioscan failed to identify Kal-el, and the "S" logo in his shield and his cape are further torn away from him in an attempt to reclaim "stolen artifacts."
The new costume is a far cry from Superman's last one. His previous costume change, which debuted in the "New 52 "back in 2011, also did away with the classic costume, and into something that resembled what Henry Cavill eventually used in the movie "Man of Steel".
The change in the superhero's costume is just one of DC's way to give a new and fresh approach to their best-selling titles. In an earlier report by Nerdist, Marvel confirmed that the issues that will be released after the Convergence series are to be rebranded to feature a more modern and sleek look.
In a press release made by DC co-publisher Dan DiDio, the upcoming releases in DC "will trump continuity as we continue to empower creators to tell the best stories in the industry " to make way for a "new era for the DC universe" that allows the creators to be more reflective of what is going on in society today.
DC also confirmed the launch of at least twenty-four first issues in June. Among the DC titles which will also hit bookstores next month along with Action Comics #41 are Harley Quinn #17 (on sale June 10), Sinestro #12 (on sale June 17), Batgirl #41 (on sale June 24), and Grayson (on sale June 24).
Incidentally, Superman is not the only DC superhero who will be sporting a new look. Last March, HitFix debuted Wonder Woman's new costume for David Finch's Wonder Woman #41.
The upcoming Action Comics #41 issue features a new storyline for Superman entitled "Truth". Written by Greg Pak and Aaron Kuder, with illustrations done by Aaron Kuder as well, the issue will be out on June 3.
