The cover of the tenth novel in Jeff Kinney's well-loved children's book series "Diary of a Wimpy Kid", has been released by its publisher, Amulet Books, on Apr. 27.
Titled "Old School", Kinney revealed the cover to thousands of fans during a live webcast on XM Siruis radio from New York City . Over 500,00 fans worldwide tuned in to Puffin Virtually Live website to watch the author discuss the upcoming book.
Kinney, who also serves as the book's illustrator, decided to give the tenth installment of the series, an all-black cover to give it a more old school edge. "For the 10th book, I wanted to bring things back to basics, and nothing says 'Old School' for a cartoonist more than black, the color of ink," the author said during the webcast.
In an earlier statement released by Kinney about the upcoming book, the author said that the tenth book will be his "chance to reset the series", and the theme "back-to-basics" will be carried out throughout the novel. A teaser cover has been released last month, alongside the book announcement.
"I feel like, in a way, I'm writing the first book all over again," Kinney shared during the webcast.
According to the Wimpy Kid's official website, "Old School", will still feature the series' main protagonist, middle-schooler Greg Heffley, as he goes through a new school year. Publisher's Weekly reports that in the upcoming book, Greg has to figure out how to reconcile the age gap between him and the chaperones during a week-long field trip to a farm.
The other books in "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series have been consistently topping the New York Times best-seller list and USA's Today's Best-Selling Books list since its first release in 2007. The books have also won various awards over the past years, including Favorite Book award in Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, and became part of the American Library Association Notable Book list.
In 2010, the first book in the series, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" debuted in theaters worldwide, followed by the second book "Rodrick Rules" in 2011. The last book in the series to be adapted to the big screen was "Dog Days" in 2012. So far, there have been no indications that a fourth film based on the series will be produced.
"Old School" is set to hit stores Nov. 3. It will be released to 90 countries across the globe on the said date. The book is also available for pre-order online.
