People having been blogging about books since the beginning of time...well, not really. More like since the invention of some blogging software. Though we don't know which blog platform was first to hit the Internet scene, we do know that would mean books have been blogged about since the late 1990s or so. But blogging about books has really taken off since then and now boasts a large network of bookworm bloggers from around the world.
In a 2010 Los Angeles Times article, the then marketing director of Mulholland Books, an imprint of the more well known publisher Little Brown said, As 'traditional' venues for book promotion shrink and online avenues open up, it's important for publishers to take all possible places that books can be reviewed seriously. They are a community of true readers and book lovers who maintain their sites for the sheer love of it. So if they get behind a particular author or title, readers, Googlers, other bloggers will feel the genuine enthusiasm."
There are many popular book blogs from ones written by individuals to those written by individuals who are part of a larger media institution like the New York Times or the New Yorker. People have different reasons for starting a book blog from giving themselves an incentive to read more to getting free books from publishers. But the one common denominator (we would think) is that they all enjoy reading. For some their blogs have given way to other opportunities including partnering with independent booksellers or forming a blogger collective. For example there's Rebecca Joines Schinsky of The Book Lady's Blog who works with her Richmond, Virginia local bookstore Fountain Bookstore and runs a book podcast with two other blogges at Bookrageous.
There are also children and teen book bloggers that have joined the fray like 16-year-old Bri of the Book Nerd Blog who writes that she is an aspiring author who loves Harry Potter. She adds that her blog is a "combination of two of her favorite things: books and the Internet." Sounds like just the right happy mix--books and the Internet. This might explain the growth of book blogs and why as long as there is the Internet (it's not going anywhere) there will be blogging about books.
