Dan Brown's latest and much awaited book, "Inferno" was placed at the number one spot on U.S. best-sellers list in the first week of its release.

Brown's new novel sees the return of Harvard symbologist and "Da Vinci Code" protagonist Robert Langdon and takes place in Italy. The story revolves around the literary masterpiece "Dante's Inferno," reveals Doubleday.

The list is compiled using data from independent and chain bookstores, book wholesalers and independent distributors nationwide.
