Author Stephen King and his wife will reportedly donate $3 million for the refurbishment of their local Bangor Public Library.
Libraries have always held a special place in the heart of author Stephen King and have played an eminent role in many of his horror novels. However, King finds it disheartening that libraries are struggling to survive and keep pace with the growing technology of today. In his own small way, King has tried to support these libraries and reportedly he and his wife will donate $3 million to Bangor Public Library, which is a third of the $9 million the library is looking to raise for refurbishment.
Barbara McDade, director of Bangor Public Library, told the Bangor Daily News that Stephen and Tabitha King have said they will donate $3 million of the $9 million the library is looking to raise for refurbishment, provided the library can raise the other $6 million. McDade states that the author and his wife have always been "great" supporters of the library.
In the 1990's, King had donated $2.5 million to build a new wing for the library, reveals McDade. A few years ago, he also rebuilt the front marble steps of the library, that had worn-out to the point where it became dangerous for people to use.
King's short story "The Library Policeman" also contained a note that expressed the author's love for the library as a child, because since he was a relatively poor boy, this was the only place where he could get all the books he wanted for free.
"I feared becoming lost in the dark stacks, I feared being forgotten in a dark corner of the reading room and ending up locked in for the night, I feared the old librarian with the blue hair and the cat's-eye glasses and the almost lipless mouth who would pinch the backs of your hands with her long, pale fingers and hiss 'Shhh!' if you forgot where you were and started to talk too loud," he writes. "And yes, I feared the Library Police.
