Author Donna Tartt returns to writing after 11 years with her latest novel slated to be published this October.
Donna Tartt's debut novel "The Secret History" made the author a star overnight. Ten years later she released her second novel "The Little Friend," which won her the WH Smith Literary Award and a nomination for the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2003. Now, 11 years later, the American author has returned to writing with her third novel "The Goldfinch."
The New York Observer reveals the plot of the novel to be about a young boy in New York City, who loses his mother to an explosion but he astonishingly survives. In order not to be taken away to an orphanage, the young boy named Theo scrambles through the streets of New York. A painting that reminds him of his mother catches Theo's attention and before he knows it, he's drawn into the art underworld.
The book is being published by Amazon and the publishers have announced October 22, 2013 to be its release date. The book was earlier scheduled for a September release but has now been pushed back to October.
Explaining to The Guardian about why she has such long intervals between the releases of her novels, the author says that she thinks it would be "hell" to have to release a book every year.
"Part of the problem with success is that it seduces people into overproduction," she said to The Guardian. . "When my first book came out, I was very confused because I was thrown into a world that I knew nothing about. I just kind of lived like a student, worked like a student. And then all of a sudden - well, the metaphor that comes to mind is a shark tank. It wasn't quite that bad. But it was a shock. It was a bucket of cold water. People you'd meet and talk to and journalists would say, 'Oh, what are you going to do to top this one? If your name's not out there in two years, people will forget all about you.' I mean, jeez, what are they talking about? William Styron said when he was about my age, that he realized he had about five books in him, and that was OK. I think I have about the same number. Five."
