Tulsi Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman, has lately raised buzz with her criticism of Hillary Clinton in her newly published book. Gabbard revisits a disputed issue relating to Russian influence and political manipulation. However, an in-depth analysis of the facts unveils otherwise.
In October 2019, Clinton suggested on a podcast hosted by David Plouffe that Republicans might back a third-party candidate in the 2020 election to siphon votes from the Democratic nominee, possibly someone from the Democratic primary whom they were grooming for the role.
Though not explicitly naming her, Clinton implied that Russia favored this candidate. This sparked rumors about Gabbard, who was a Democratic primary candidate. Gabbard then criticized Clinton's comments and wrote an article for the Wall Street Journal.
The controversy arose from Clinton's remarks being misconstrued, leading to widespread confusion and misinterpretation. Clinton only talked about the possibility of the Republicans favoring the third-party bid and mentioning Gabbard as the possible candidate. Despite initially suing Clinton for calling her a 'Russian asset,' Gabbard later dropped the lawsuit.
Before Gabbard's lawsuit, the Washington Post addressed the misinterpretation of Clinton's remarks and emphasized the need for accurate reporting. Clinton's team clarified within a day that she was referring to the GOP, not Russians, eyeing Gabbard as a potential third-party candidate. The paper awarded Gabbard's claims a significant factual error rating, highlighting the importance of distinguishing between speculation and factual statements.
Gabbard's recent book, "For Love of Country: Why I Left the Democratic Party," offers a mix of personal anecdotes and political commentary, with a notable inclination towards supporting former President Donald Trump. Within its pages, Gabbard criticizes US policies regarding Ukraine and aligns herself with Trump on various legal matters.
Furthermore, Gabbard's narrative in the book perpetuates conspiracy theories and inaccuracies, such as her misrepresentation of Clinton's comments and unsubstantiated claims about media coverage. Despite numerous fact-checking and corrections by renowned sources, her claims continue.
Gabbard's transition from a promising figure within the Democratic Party to an Independent is detailed in her book. She points to reasons such as the party's growing emphasis on 'wokeness,' perceived racial biases, and intolerance as motivating factors for her departure. Gabbard criticizes the Democratic Party, describing it as controlled by an elite group of warmongers influenced by woke ideology and anti-White sentiments, posing a threat to constitutional freedom.
The book is the first of two books in a deal with Regnery Publishing. During her time in the House of Representatives, Gabbard gained notice for criticizing her party's leadership, especially on Ukraine-Russia relations. She notably accused Clinton of being the symbol of corruption within the Democratic Party.
Gabbard endorsed Bernie Sanders' 2016 presidential bid over Clinton's and briefly pursued her candidacy in the 2020 election before withdrawing and supporting eventual nominee Joe Biden.
Recently, Gabbard declined an invitation to serve as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s running mate for his independent presidential campaign. Despite developing a friendship with Kennedy through several meetings, she respectfully declined the offer after careful consideration. The reasons for her decision were not disclosed.
Kennedy or his campaign did not immediately comment on Gabbard's statement about declining the offer, although a person close to him confirmed the meetings with Gabbard and mentioned that they explored various options. Some allies of former President Trump have also suggested Gabbard's name as a potential vice-presidential candidate.
