'Insane City' Author Dave Barry Talks Miami Weddings, Strippers and Drugs In Latest Novel

Author Dave Barry latest novel "Insane City" is all about strippers, drugs and a big Miami society wedding. Barry talks to Reuters about the novel, his writing style, drugs and animal right.

Barry opened up about his thoughts about being told time and again that his books are usually aimed at the lowest common denominator audience and says he doesn't really worry about that. He says he's happy that they're his audience and calls them "smart" for getting his humor in his books.

Barry also reveals that he's been a humor writer for the whole of his writing career and has no intentions of writing anything regarded as literature. He says that through his work, he doesn't intend on enlightening his readers but entertaining them.

"I don't know that I could, to be honest. But that is not my goal in life. I have been a humor writer for pretty much my whole career, so I try to entertain people. I don't think of my job as being to enlighten them but just to keep them entertained," says the witty author.

When asked who he imagines as his audience while writing, Barry replies that he writes what he feels he would enjoy reading. He likes reading and writing books with a lot of humor and unexpected turn of events. He clarifies that it's important to him that every book he reads or writes should have a "satisfying ending."

Barry says his humor in his books are mostly American-centric but he is aware that they do get published in other countries as well but doesn't know how well the humor comes across in the translated versions of his works. He says that though he has received letters once in a while from fans who've read his translated books and have loved it, he still writes for mostly American audiences.

Barry also clarifies that he used to do illegal drinking and drugs during his college days but not anymore. He drinks beer and wine now. When asked about where he stands on animal rights, the actor replies, "I suppose I stand squarely with the vast majority of people. That is to say, I think I am basically nice to animals and I certainly don't like to see them suffer. On the other hand, I do eat hamburgers."
