The film has a lengthy development history, according to Variety. It started in 1992 when Wild Things Productions aimed to bring the film adaptation to life. Initially, renowned animation director Henry Selick was set to direct, with a screenplay by Michael Tolkin. However, progress halted when Selick departed to work on "James and the Giant Peach."

Spike Jonze then became director for a mixed live-action and animation project, with David O. Russell assisting with rewrites. Unfortunately, Jonze left the project shortly before filming began. Sony initiated the development of the present rendition of the movie in 2010. As reported by Screen Rant, the film's announcement came in early 2021, with filming commencing a year afterward.
Speaking to People, Levi shared that playing Harold brought him much joy. He enjoyed fully embracing the character's optimism and boundless imagination. He adored and described his character as 'nothing but light.'
Levi shared his delight in the camaraderie on set, highlighting spontaneous moments of singing and dancing. Deschanel echoed his sentiments, expressing her love for the project and the collaborative spirit among the cast and crew.
Deschanel's enthusiasm for the adaptation stemmed from her genuine appreciation for the original book. Deschanel's connection to the story extends to her role as a parent, as she has shared the book's magic with her children on numerous occasions. She found herself captivated by the adaptation, highlighting the portrayal of the characters.
