Decoding Romantasy: Where Romance Meets Fantasy

Romantasy is a clever blend of romance and fantasy. While Bloomsbury claims to have coined the term to identify the genre spearheaded by Sarah J. Maas, it has been included in Urban Dictionary since 2008. This genre has gained significant traction on social media and in marketing for fantasy romance titles. The likes of Rebecca Yarros, whose novel "Iron Flame" became Waterstones' highest-selling pre-order title in a single day, are gracing bestseller charts alongside Maas.

Romantasy, like mainstream fantasy, often has familiar storylines but with a twist. It blends romance elements and usually features a strong female lead. The plot centers around her intricate relationships, exploring tropes like enemies to lovers or love triangles.

Recently, best-selling author Maas surprised fans at a midnight release party for her book, "House of Flame and Shadow." The audience's response was similar to that of a rock concert, a rare reception for an author. With the wildly successful novel series under her belt, Maas has sold an astounding 37 million copies of her books in 38 different languages worldwide.

Social Media Magic: BookTok

One key to romantasy authors' success is their popularity on social media platforms. Fans share their rankings, theories, favorite quotes, and even outfits inspired by these fantastical love stories on the dedicated bookish corner of TikTok known as BookTok. Maas' publisher, Bloomsbury, noted that videos with hashtags connected to her books have amassed over 14 billion views on TikTok alone.

Over 215 billion TikTok videos use #booktok. Young women, particularly those aged 16 to 25, are enthusiastic viewers. Research from The Publishers' Association reveals that three out of five individuals in this age group credit BookTok for igniting their passion for reading.

BookTok also boosted physical Bookstore sales. Almost half (49%) of those surveyed visit physical bookstores to purchase books they discovered on BookTok. In response to this trend, bookshops are adapting rapidly by adjusting their inventory and offering a wider range of contemporary books to meet the interests of a diverse audience.

Without BookTok, the rise of romantasy would not be as notable. Literary agent Hannah Schofield shared that BookTok is a major driver for romantasy's popularity, finding a perfect balance between romance and fantasy genres, both widely loved on the platform.

Literary agent Alice Caprio agrees, stating that romantasy combines several already successful elements on BookTok, such as catchy premises, emotionally charged stories, writing reminiscent of fanfiction, and captivating tropes.

Romantasy in Changing Times: A Haven for Hope

Romantasy books take readers to fantastical places with magic, dragons, and fairies. These novels are unique because they incorporate traditional romantic narratives, such as soulmates, enemies-turned-lovers, and complex love triangles. Ajebowale Roberts, an editor at HarperCollins, explains that readers are drawn to romantasy because it offers familiar romantic tropes set in immersive and escapable worlds.

These novels often include explicit scenes, lovingly referred to as spice or smut. Kerri Maniscalco, author of "Throne of the Fallen," sees these spicy books as a safe space for readers to explore their fantasies without reservation.

Moreover, romantasy novels introduce bold heroines and strong yet nuanced female characters, providing a refreshing change for female readers who may have felt underrepresented in fantasy.

Romantasy novels are not only breaking barriers in terms of explicit content. Still, they are also playing a significant role in normalizing queer romance. While predominantly white and straight characters have been prevalent, authors like Nisha J. Tuli contribute to a slow but steady change. Tuli emphasized the importance of representing characters of color, reflecting the evolving perspectives within the genre.
