Cheslie Kryst's desire to become an author will now come true. Through the efforts of her mother, April Simpkins, and Forefront Books, Kryst's book, entitled 'By the Time You Read This: The Space Between Cheslie's Smile and Mental Illness,' is scheduled for release on April 23.

Simpkins shared that getting the book published was among Kryst's 'final wishes,' and fulfilling them means a lot to her. Shortly before her passing, Krysts texted her mother, sharing a personal wish to see a book she had written get published. On January 30, 2022, Kryst ended her life by jumping from a high level at The Orion Condominiums after battling with depression.

In 2019, Kryst became Miss USA and made history, along with other pageant title holders, as the first group of Black women to hold their respective titles in a single year. Along with her success in pageantry, she was also a licensed lawyer in North Carolina and South Carolina. Then, Kryst became a correspondent for 'Extra' in October 2019 and earned two Daytime Emmy Award nominations.

According to Forefront Books, the book 'By the Time You Read This' is divided into two parts. The first half features Kryst's thoughts in her own words on her proudest accomplishments. Then, the second part of the book is written by her mother, Simpkins, providing her perspective from the day of Kryst's death. The book delves into the reality of mental health struggles and offers hope for those left behind.

Simpkins shared that Kryst presented a joyful and lively demeanor on TV and at events, which many perceived as her true self. However, beneath that exterior, she carried a significant amount of pain. Simpkins believes that the book serves as a bridge, addressing the disparity between the public perception of her smile and her private struggle with depression.

Simpkins provided 'Extra' with exclusive footage of Kryst announcing the completion of her book during a family vacation in Israel for the Miss Universe pageant in 2021.

Kryst's book promises to provide insight into the challenges faced by those dealing with mental health issues. Whether you personally face challenges in maintaining your mental well-being or care deeply for someone with such issues and have a hard time navigating through such struggles, this book aims to offer an understanding of a common reality affecting numerous families annually. Additionally, it seeks to inspire hope for those enduring the aftermath.

The poignant release will contribute to Kryst's legacy and her commitment to raising mental health awareness. The book's proceeds will contribute to the Cheslie C. Kryst Foundation, established to aid millions of people battling mental illness. 'By the Time You Read This' is available for preorder, and Simpkins hopes the book encourages being kind, listening, and creating safe spaces for those in need.
