A new book has disclosed that a union leader likened New York Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) not to Eva Perón, as Donald Trump did, but to Bruce Springsteen. Michael Podhorzer, then political director of the AFL-CIO, made the analogy when AOC burst onto the political scene in 2018.
'I was floored,' expressed Podhorzer, drawing a parallel to the famous Jon Landau line about Springsteen being the future of rock 'n roll. This unexpected association sheds light on AOC's unique political trajectory. Joshua Green, the author of the book, mentions Podhozer as a union official who works hard to make voters care about working people.
Landau was a writer who later became Springsteen's manager and producer. He made his famous judgment in May 1974 after watching Springsteen perform in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Springsteen achieved great success by selling millions of records and winning numerous Grammys.
AOC scored a historic primary win in 2018 against Joe Crowley, a Democratic House leader. Known for her working-class appeal, AOC describes herself as a regular New Yorker striving to work in subways. The book 'The Rebels: Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the Struggle for a New American Politics' explores AOC's journey alongside other Democratic figures. Podhorzer, a union official advocating for working people, offers an intriguing perspective on AOC's political resonance, akin to Springsteen's impact on rock music.

Green explores the transformative struggle within the left wing of American politics in the book. He draws parallels with his earlier work, 'Devil's Bargain,' which detailed how economic populism influenced Donald Trump on the right. In 'The Rebels,' Green focuses on the left's evolution, examining the careers of Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The narrative unfolds against a backdrop of Democrats aligning with Wall Street and big tech, leading to tensions over economic fairness. The financial crisis of 2008 propels Warren, Sanders, and AOC into the spotlight as champions against an unjust system.
AOC, once a bartender, started her political term by occupying Speaker Pelosi's office. Over time, she evolved into a capable and effective politician, demonstrating a keen understanding of translating ideas into actual legislation. Green shared that colleagues often expressed surprise, realizing that the hardworking and well-prepared woman who collaborated productively with them did not match the socialist firebrand image portrayed publicly.
The book delves into the clash between Democratic centrists and progressives, questioning whether the party can unite in a divided political landscape. 'The Rebels' is a compelling account that scrutinizes the legacy and challenges of these political figures in shaping America's future.
The book delves into AOC's rising influence and potential presidential aspirations, revealing how she has emerged as a key figure among the Democratic left. Despite initial portrayals within the Squad, a group of prominent female representatives of color, AOC is increasingly recognized as a significant force shaping the future of the left in post-Biden politics.
The book's insights provide a fresh understanding of AOC's role in the evolving landscape of American politics. Green believes that AOC and similar figures have a real opportunity to step into prominent roles when the older Democratic leaders step down.
