In chilly weather, taking the opportunity to discover indoor spaces and picking up a book for a cozy read later is ideal. Whether you want to showcase your experiences on social media or appreciate an impressive local structure, Wordery, an online bookstore, suggests that the central branch of Seattle Public Library (SPL) is the ultimate destination.
The central branch of SPL has been declared the most Instagrammed library globally, according to Wordery. The methodology involved compiling a list of 40 libraries recognized as the most beautiful by various publications, tracking associated hashtags, and comparing Instagram stats.
The Seattle library edged out others, including the Bodleian Library in Oxford. While the title Most Instagrammable raises questions about libraries vying for social media attention, it highlights a trend where aesthetics and visual appeal may rival traditional library use - the study, though somewhat superficial, prompts considerations about the intersection of social media and library influence.
Rem Koolhaas' new library boasts avant-garde architecture, blending European theory with Northwest practicality. The building, characterized by a crouching exterior and dynamic interior platforms bathed in colorful light, stands out among Seattle's audacious landmarks. It is hailed as a fusion of high-tech sophistication and retro-futurist charm, diverging from the conventional business core.
The library embraces entertainment and functionality, serving as a comprehensive information hub that celebrates books while embracing technology. Externally, it exudes brutal chic with a diamond-shaped steel and glass skin. In contrast, the asymmetrical steel is internally painted in a soothing baby blue, catering to the library's innovative needs.

Andra Addison, communications director at SPL, expressed surprise at the library's title of the most Instagrammed but welcomed the recognition. She highlighted the building's popularity for photos and film shoots, attracting indie bands, filmmakers, and photographers. Addison, who has been with SPL since the Koolhaas building's opening in 2004, noted the initial controversy and excitement surrounding its radical design.
The library's faceted glass facade, futuristic escalators, vibrant interiors, and stunning view continue to captivate, making it a popular destination. Addison appreciates the library's newfound Instagram fame, recognizing it as an incredible way to draw people to the library.
The architect and his team foresaw the impact of technology on libraries, leading to the creation of open, adaptable spaces. In a 2006 Ted Talk, Koolhaas' partner, Joshua Prince-Ramus, highlighted books as a form of technology sharing space with emerging media. Contrary to its Instagram fame, a recent visit to the library showcased its diverse uses: book collection, coffee gatherings, computer station use, music practice, historical research, and more.
The library emphasizes experiences over mere photo opportunities, fostering a democratic and inclusive environment. The Koolhaas building's narrative nature aligns with Instagram's episodic portrayal, reflecting shared aspects of populism.
What defines a library, if not a collection of narratives reflecting our shared experiences? It is a scrollable, microfiche-capable feed documenting our collective journeys, truths, and fiction. While its title as the most Instagrammed library may fade, SPL will endure as a repository filled with snapshots-capturing characters, scenes, buildings, and perspectives that unveil our shared humanity.
