Visually Impaired Protesters Say Amazon's Kindle Is Not Accessible To The Blind

Visually impaired protesters brought out a rally in front of Amazon's Seattle head quarters protesting that their Kindle device is not accessible for the blind.

After a very good reception, Amazon's Kindle received, things don't seem to be going quite as well as they expected. First, three weeks after the launch of Amazon's Kindle Fire HD, discounts were being offered on the device, which lead experts to speculate as to how well the new tablet was actually doing in the market. Usually, when a tablet is doing well, like Apple's iPad mini, discounts are hard to come by, but Amazon seems to be heavy on discounts right now.

Now, zozens of visually impaired people with walking sticks and seeing-eye dogs protested outside Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, Saturday, claiming that the Kindle e-readers aren't fully accessible to the blind.

Protesters chanted, "Kindles aren't cool, keep them out of school," as they marched in the cold rain. According to a report on KPLU, they say they're concerned about Amazon's push to get Kindles and Kindle e-books in classrooms.

"We're bringing the disparity right into public and private education," the visually impaired former New York Governor David Paterson said. "That is just plain wrong."

December doesn't seem to be a good month for the Kindle family. Just this week Walmart announced that the shelves that, until now had Kindle devices on them, will now contain Barnes & Noble's NOOK devices.

"Our two new tablets offer the best quality reading and entertainment experiences, at the best price, and we're excited to bring Nook HD and Nook HD+ to Walmart customers in-store and online," Jamie Iannone, president of digital products at Nook Media, said in a statement. "We invite Walmart customers to explore these stunning tablets so they can discover that with Nook HD and Nook HD+, every book read, every movie watched and every game played is rendered in a digital quality never before seen and unmatched by other tablets."
