With "Breaking Dawn - Part 2" hitting theaters Friday Nov. 16, "Twilight" fans will get one last taste of the epic saga of star-crossed vampire love and wave goodbye. But don't despair "Twi-hards" - author Stephanie Meyer is far from done adapting her supernatural romance novels to the screen. The first full-length trailer for "The Host," the only novel Meyer has written since "Twilight," just debuted online, and will arrive March 2013.
Ever since "Twilight" became such an international phenomenon, there have been scores of imitators trying to capture Meyer's singular brand of palpable sexual tension and otherworldly narratives. With the "Twilight" franchise ending soon, the list of book-to-movie adaptations in 2013 looking to snare some of that same spark is sprawling. "The Host" feels distinctly Meyer, though.
No longer rooted in the modern world of jail-bait-chasing vampires, the trailer for "The Host" paints the film as falling somewhere between the surreal alien invasion tale of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" and the futuristic dystopic society moral, "Logan's Run." All of which fits perfectly well: "The Host" was directed by Andrew Niccol, responsible for the 1997 genetic engineering Sci-Fi flick "Gattaca."
"The Host" tells the story of an alien invasion by a race called Souls that takes over Earth and the majority of its population. Like "Body Snatchers," the minds of humans are taken over, while their bodies remain intact. Melanie (Saoirse Ronan), one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, and she is certain there's no hope. Wanderer (also Ronan), the invading "soul," is in Melanie's body. She was warned about the challenges of living inside a human, but Wanderer is surprised to find the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish control of her mind.
"The Host" was named one of the "Best Books of May" for 2008 by Amazon, and also received praise for its ending. "Readers... will gleefully note that the story's end leaves the door open for a sequel-or another series," said Amazon.
"The Host" was a New York Times bestseller, and remained on this list for 26 weeks.
Author Meyer is also a film producer. She started her own production company in 2011 with producer Meghan Hibbett, called Fickle Fish Films, which is producing "The Host."
Along with Ronan, the film co-stars Max Irons, William Hurt, Diane Kruger and Frances Fisher. "The Host" hits theaters March 29, 2013.
