With the beloved "Twilight" franchise waving goodbye to audiences Nov. 14, it's only natural every studio is frantically looking for the next big franchise. Could the new paranormal romance drama "Beautiful Creatures," carry on Edward and Bella's torch? Based on the newly released trailer for the movie, we're betting it all on this one.
Based on the New York Times bestselling fantasy novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, "Beautiful Creatures" is the first book in the "Caster Chronicles" series, which features a total of four novels.
A supernatural star-crossed lovers romance set in the fictional town of Gatlin, South Carolina, "Beautiful Creatures" is seen through the eyes of Ethan Wate who lives with his writer father, and housekeeper Amma who is "more like [Ethan's] grandmother." Wate, a young man longing to escape his small town, and Lena, a mysterious new girl become friends, and together uncover dark secrets about their respective families, their history and their town.
The book was published on December 1, 2009 by Little, Brown, and Company, and was named one of MTV News's "series to watch" in 2010.
Alcon Entertainment purchased the film rights to "Beautiful Creatures" in 2009, with Richard LaGravenese ("The Fisher King," "P.S. I Love You") signing on to write and direct. Erwin Stoff, Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove signed on to produce the movie.
The trailer has an undeniably better production value, and flow than many of the other films out there trying to ride the "Twilight" wake. Not to mention some surprisingly strong casting choices for what many would immediately knock as young adult fantasy pulp.
The film stars Alden Ehrenreich ("Tetro"), newcomer Alice Englert, Academy Award(R) winner Jeremy Irons ("Reversal of Fortune") Oscar(R) nominee Viola Davis ("The Help," "Doubt"), Emmy Rossum (TV's "Shameless") and Academy Award(R) winner Emma Thompson ("Howard's End," "Sense and Sensibility").
"I don't believe we have one fate and one choice - we make our own lives," says Ehrenreich as Ethan in the trailer. Sounds convincing enough to us. Plus, with an opening scene that reeks of "Carrie"-esque demonic telepathy, how could we say no?
The movie began filming in May 2012, with much of the proposed filming locations being in and around New Orleans. Appropriately, "Beautiful Creatures" will be released in theaters on February 13th, 2013.
