Nokia's Lumia 920 is highly anticipated this year. However, Nokia hasn't announced a release date or price for the new smartphone, similar to Samsung's Galaxy Note II.
Nokia recently heat up the smartphone race by announcing its new Windows 8 smartphones,Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 on Sept. 5.
Could this just be a strategy against Apple's iPhone 5? Let's look at the details.
According to Wired.com, an analyst said that it might be a business decision or the final arrangements are still being finalized.
"In some cases it's a desire to announce the product before others announce their competing platforms," said Francis Sideco, an analyst for industry forecaster IHS. This seems like it could be the case with Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia, who announced new handsets in a flurry of events just before Apple's on Wednesday. "Other times, it could be a business decision that was made for various reasons," Sideco added. "And in others, it could be that final channel arrangements are still being finalized."
For smartphones, in particular, carriers are often the reason behind the lack of details at the launch events, according to Reticle Research analyst Ross Rubin. "In general, carriers prefer to announce the availability, and thus the price, on their networks," Rubin told Wired. "So it's not an option for the device brand. For the iPhone, having Apple control the announcement of the device pricing and availability details is but one of the conditions upon which the company insists - as is not having the carrier brand on the device."
For strategic reasons, manufacturers rush out product announcements before they've settled on price structures or release dates, according to Wired. Blog WMPoweruser points out that by announcing it's new top-of-the-line handset before the iPhone, Nokia has become a constant part of the iPhone 5 conversation, with several commenters calling the Lumia the superior smartphone. It also means Nokia will get extra stage time when the various carriers announce they'll be carrying it in the coming months.
The Galaxy Note 2 will directly compete with the iPhone 5. It will feature a 5.5-inch screen and 8-megapixel camera. It is also expected to have Android 4.1 Jelly Bean pre-installed and come with the S Pen experience.
It is believed that consumers still want an iPhone 5 over the Lumia 920.
According to PC Mag, CouponCodes4u.com surveyed 2,371 American smartphone owners between the ages of 18 and 35, and found that most of the respondents liked the look of the new Lumia 920, and were impressed by its specs. However, when asked whether they would consider switching their current cell phone contract to get the Lumia 920, 52 percent of respondents said no.
Many reports recently announced that Nokia will release date Lumia 920 on Nov. 2. As for the Galaxy Note 2, reports say by the end of the year.
