Many blockbuster superhero films and TV series started out as comic books. Sometimes, the major changes made by writers and directors cause new events or new characters.
Here are five comic book characters who were not born from comic books, but were created from the screen:
Chloe Sullivan (Smallville)
To many fans, Chloe Sullivan will always be Superman's best friend in his young years. However, many people are not aware that Chloe was not an original comic book character.
Chloe first appeared in the pilot episode of "Smallville". The TV series revolves around young Clark Kent's ten-year journey of discovering his superpowers and understanding his identity. Throughout the series, Chloe helped Clark in many situations and in making important decisions.
The character made her first appearance in the DC Universe through the a Jimmy Olen comic book feature, reports the Comic Book Resources.
Jimmy Olsen (Superman)
It appears that another friend of Superman did not actually originate from the comics. According to Comic Vine, Jimmy first appeared in the 1940 radio show called "The Adventures of Superman".
He only joined the comic book world through "Superman #13", where villain Archer also made his first appearance. He also appeared in the "Smallville" series as a dedicated journalist and Chloe Sullivan's love interest.
Harley Quinn (Batman)
Harley Quinn is among the most favorite villains in the DC world. She first appeared as the humorous female sidekick of Joker, acting completely devoted to him, in the 8th episode of "Batman: The Animated Series".
She entered the comic book world through the comic book "The Batman Adventures: Mad Love". The story revealed the origin of the character.
Harley Quinn, named Harleen Quinzel, was a psychiatric intern at the Arkham Asylum. She volunteered to analyze Joker, fell madly in love with him, and helped him escape. She then turned back on her career to become the famous Harley Quinn.
Agent Phil Coulson (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
Phil Coulson is the director of S.H.I.E.L.D., a counter-terrorism and intelligence agency in the United States. The agency was built to protect the United States from all kinds of possible threats.
Unlike all other agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Phil did not originate from the comics, but from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
X-23 (X-Men)
A top-secret project attempted to recreate the experiment that made Wolverine. After failing, the director then ordered the creation of a clone.
Due to the damage to the sample, the scientist was forced to create a female clone instead. X-23 was born. Just like Wolverine, X-23 has claws and healing factor.
She first appeared in the 3rd episode of "X-Men: Evolution". She debuted in the comic book world through the NYX #3.
