E.L. James' 'Fifty Shades Freed' Tops List of Books Most Likely To Be Left Behind In Hotels

E.L. James' erotic novel "Fifty Shades Freed" topped the list of novels most likely to be left behind in hotel rooms.

After taking home some glitter accolades for her "Fifty Shades" trilogy, author E.L. James finds herself topping a not-so-glittering list for the second consecutive year. Her third instalment in the erotic trilogy "Fifty Shades Freed" was listed the number one novel that was most likely to be discarded or left behind in budget hotel rooms.  This is complied and released each year by Travelodge.

The first two instalments in the trilogy also made it to the list, at the sixth and tenth spot respectively. Erotic novels were prominent in the list. Others included Sylvia Day's "Bared to You" was placed second and Jennifer Probst's "The Marriage Bargain" came in at number 3. Bestselling novel "Gone Girl" by Gillian Flynn and J.K Rowling's attempt at erotic novel "The Casual Vacancy" also featured on the list.

This is not the first time James' has found herself heading this list. "Fifty Shades of Grey" was ranked 'numero uno' on the 2012 list too.

"Our 2013 books left behind index has certainly revealed that the Fifty Shades phenomenon has created an appetite for Britons wanting to read more erotic romantic literature," Shakila Ahmed, Travelodge spokeswoman said in a press release. "Over the last three years our annual books left behind study has shown a decline in celebrity biographies but a rise in fiction books especially for thriller and romantic trilogies. A good book offers the ultimate escape which is a great companion whilst travelling."

To understand why travellers generally leave behind such novels, the hotel chain conducted a survey and found three main reasons. The top reason was that they had finished reading the book and found it more convenient to leave it behind than carry it back home. The second reason was that it was a genuine oversight and the third was that they got bored reading the book so they discarded it in the hotel.

According to the press reports, books that are left behind in Travelodge hotel rooms and not claimed within three months are donated to a charitable book store.
