Author Adam Bradley has begun work on his sixth book immediately after his latest novel "Speaking From Among the Bones" was released last month.
Author Adam Bradley believes in wasting no time when it comes to writing. The author began writing the first of his "Flavia de Luce" mysteries when he was in his mid-sixties and ever since, there's been no stopping him. His fifth novel "Speaking From Among the Bones" was published last month, and reports have it that the author has already begun work on his new novel. Currently, Bradley is working with Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes to develop his series of mystery books for television.
Speaking to Reuters about the TV series and writing mysteries, the author says the character of Flavia de Luce materialized on its own. "I can't really take any credit for her at all. She was presented to me on a platter so to speak. I was trying to write another mystery novel, and Flavia just appeared on the page and completely hijacked my book. And it took me a long time to realize that she wanted her own book. She came absolutely complete with all of her characteristics, her enthusiasms, her house, her family, her chemical lab - all of that was presented to me," Bradley says.
Bradley also admits that he has never thought of Flavia appearing onscreen, but has always written "visually". The author has turned down many offers in the past to adapt his series into a movie or a TV series. He admits he has been waiting for the right producer to come along and always thought the character Flavia should be left to the reader's imagination. However, he changed his mind when director Sam Mendes told him he had read the series and absolutely loved it.
The reason why Bradley loves writing mystery novels is because he thinks they're satisfying. "They fill in the blanks. They allow people to exercise their minds and try to solve a puzzle. They allow people to compete with the author and with other readers. Who can be the first to solve it? They're a good recreation, a form of a puzzle that lasts and lasts and lasts, and a puzzle that you can do again and again," reveals the author.
Details about the plot and title of Bradley's latest book have not been revealed yet.
