Former Donald Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro is set to release his book, "The New Maga Deal: The Unofficial Deplorables Guide to Donald Trump's 2024 Policy Platform," on July 16. The book details the supposed mistakes and omissions that led to Navarro's four-month imprisonment for criminal contempt of Congress while praising Trump's Maga movement.
Navarro was sentenced for refusing to comply with a subpoena from the House January 6 committee.
According to The Guardian, Navarro's book contains notable inaccuracies, including a misidentification of Ashli Babbitt, the Trump supporter fatally shot at the US Capitol, as a US Marine Corps veteran. In reality, Babbitt served in the US Air Force.
Navarro accuses the US Department of Justice of unfair practices in the book and criticizes the legal process, claiming that he was denied lawful defenses and faced a biased jury. He alleges that jurors were influenced by anti-Trump protesters. Navarro dismisses the violence on January 6, 2021, as instigated mainly by provocateurs, including FBI informants, and facilitated by Capitol Hill police, a claim debunked by various sources, including CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale and Poynter.
Navarro also inaccurately asserts that Nancy Pelosi rejected a request from Trump for 10,000 National Guard troops ahead of January 6, a claim refuted by Politico. During the recent debate, Trump made such assertions. His military leaders confirmed no formal offer, only some private discussions before January 6. Additionally, Navarro incorrectly claims Rosanne Boyland was beaten to death by Capitol police; Boyland died in a crush, and videos suggesting otherwise have been debunked.
Navarro's previous book, "Taking Back Trump's America: Why We Lost the White House and How We'll Win It Back," detailed his experiences in the Trump White House. Before his involvement in Trump's administration, Navarro was a Harvard-PhD economist, China hawk, green activist, and a political candidate known for quoting a fictitious expert, "Ron Vara."
Navarro's official career in the Trump administration started in 2016 when he was appointed head of the White House National Trade Council and director of trade and industrial strategy. His notoriety grew amid the COVID-19 outbreak and Trump's attempts to void the results of the 2020 election, most notably via a scheme known as the "Green Bay sweep."
Navarro's refusal to comply with the January 6 committee, citing executive privilege, led to his conviction by a Washington jury last September. After an unsuccessful appeal to the US Supreme Court, he began his prison sentence in Florida and is due for release on July 17.
According to its official description, the book aims to articulate what Maga represents, emphasizing "Populist Economic Nationalism" and outlining legislative priorities for Trump's potential second term. The book includes contributions from Russ Vought, Mike Davis, and Frank Gaffney, with an introduction by Steve Bannon, another former Trump aide currently serving a prison sentence for similar charges of criminal contempt of Congress.
Bannon praised Navarro's work, calling him the "rock star of Trump's first term" and commending the book as exhilarating and energizing.
In a statement, Trump Jr. praised Navarro for serving the nation and expressed excitement about publishing Navarro's new book. He highlighted that the book features top experts on restoring America's greatness and encouraged readers to get a copy.
