Fifty Shades of Grey' author EL James takes home National Book award with the novel winning popular fiction book award.
EL James's Fifty Shades of Grey, beat the works of Kate Mosse and Victoria Hislop and was titled the most popular fiction book of the year at the UK's National Book awards Tuesday night.
The award is given after 750 book industry experts vote and the prize is given to "an adult book of commercial fiction from a UK author, which has made a massive impact; a success in all bookselling outlets, a book that may have exceeded expectations, a bestseller".
"The award recognizes the massive impact Fifty Shades of Grey has made this year; the blockbusting title undoubtedly whipped up quite a stir from the publishing industry, media and consumers alike," said the prize's organizers. It follows the surprise announcement from US book trade bible Publishers Weekly earlier this week that James had been chosen as its publishing person of the year.
Hilary Mantel who also won the Booker Prize took home the award for the Author of the Year. Sports presenter Clare Balding took home an award for 'My Animals And Other Family' in the autobiography category.
Comedian Miranda Hart won the award for non-fiction book of the year for 'Is It Just Me' and Sue Townsend got the award for best audiobook for 'The Woman Who Went to Bed for a Year'.
Other winners included David Walliams for children's book 'Ratburger', 'The Hairy Bikers', 'Si King' and Dave Myers for Food and 'Drink Book of the Year', and Ian Rankin who scooped the Outstanding Achievement Award.
"These awards rightly celebrate the books people are actually buying, reading and loving," the Telegraph quoted Amanda Ross, from Cactus TV which produced the awards, as saying.
