It's hard to go anywhere these days without overhearing hushed conversations about "Fifty Shades of Grey," the erotic novel-cum-pop culture phenomenon from British author E. L. James.
Indeed, the book is so popular that everyone is itching to cash in on the craze. The mega-popular trilogy has spawned an upcoming movie, erotic seminars, merchandise, fake holidays, and now, getaways.
For all the fans who want to turn their fantasies into reality, there are a gaggle of hoteliers ready and waiting to give you the "Fifty Shades of Grey" experience, sans BDSM.
The Heathman Hotel in Portland, featured in the book, offers the Charlie Tango Package. Charlie Tango, of course, is the name of Christian Grey's helicopter, and the $2,700 package includes a flight, dinner for six at the hotel, roses for the ladies and limo transfers.
There's also a $40 Inner Goddess Addition that includes a grey tie and a bottle of Pouilly-Fumé wine, the vintage shared by Grey and Anastasia Steele in the first novel.
Becoming your favorite character for the night doesn't come cheap, and both packages are simply add-ons. Normal room rates apply.
Heading north to Seattle -- where the majority of the book takes place -- there are even more opportunistic hotels.
The Hotel Max is now offering a 50 Shades of Seattle package that includes a two-night stay for two in "an Artist King room on the romantic eighth floor." The deal includes chauffeured town car service, a helicopter tour of the city, and a private four-hour skippered sailing excursion on Puget Sound with gourmet picnic and a bottle of Bollinger Grande Annee Rose 1999 champagne -- "a favorite of 'Mr. Grey'."
The package starts at $1,669, plus tax, and is available through Sept. 30, 2012.
Seattle's Edgewater Hotel, meanwhile, is offering a $759 50 Shades of Romance package, which "invites lovers to experience the magic of the novel."
While the promotion does not provide whips and chains, it does include accommodations, an Audi demo drive, a bottle of Champagne, a custom 50 Shades of Romance landmark map, and copy of the book for inspiration.
Outside of the Pacific Northwest, other hotels across the U.S. are also capitalizing on the craze.
Three of the boutique Personality Hotels now offer 50 Shades of Women packages that include accommodation near San Francisco's Union Square at the Hotel Diva, Kensington Park, or Hotel Union Square. Included in the package is deluxe accommodation and a "sexy black box" designed by Minna Life, the contents of which are best read on the hotel chain's website.
Rates begin at $369 per night, plus tax, and are valid year round.
