The 13th annual Kerrytown BookFest at Michigan to be held on September 13, will be back with a familiar tradition. According to mlive.com, the planners of the highly-anticipated event will again be hosting the Edible Book Contest.
This competition is not about a cook book although it is very much about the idea of having to eat and literally devour one. This year's BookFest, which will take place at Ann Arbors Farmers Market, will be the first in five years to put up the unique contest.
The Edible Book Contest is there for the love of reading and eating. In the celebration, participants will have to get creative juices flowing by cooking up a delicious book. It can be a cake fashioned into their favorite book or a tome with vegetables as its leaves.
One of the event's organizers, Cecilia Escobar, revealed to mlive.com that so far, there are 25 resourceful bibliophiles slash chefs who are competing and she is hoping for more creative minds to step up and spend some time making an edible book.
"Anyone can participate. You just have to be creative. You have a book in mind and a theme that relates to a book in the form of something edible," Escobar told the abovementioned website. "It's a fascinating contest and very fun," she went on to say.
As listed in the official Kerrytown BookFest website, anyone who wants to literally taste victory can submit up to three entries, which should be book-related, family-friendly and made of anything that's edible and palatable.
Those interested in joining can bring their edible book entry to the book fest from 9:30 to 10:30 AM on September 13. On the same day, the panel of judges will pick the winning edible book, which, of course, will be gobbled by the audience members.
The theme for this year's gala is "Celebrating Old Friends." The organizers invited a slew of noted celebrities from the past including Bonnie Jo Campbell, Thomas Lynch, Mary Doria Russell, Julie Hyzy, Denise Swanson and Michael Buyers to facilitate in a flurry of fun activities.
The event will be kick-started with a silent auction with attendees getting an opportunity to share a delicious Zingerman's breakfast with Bonnie Jo Campbell and Thomas Lynch. As the day progresses, there will be booth signing and other exciting activities centered on short stories, debut novels and social media.
The 13th annual Kerrytown BookFest will also see some poetry slamming.
