If anything, "Star Wars Episode 7: The Force Awakens" will once again open up the well-loved growing franchise to its cult of devoted fans. There will be more movies to churn from this meteoric realm, and one of which will be an origin spinoff starring everyone's favorite gun-toting bandit, Han Solo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a film that centers on the heroic icon's days before becoming one of the most revered leaders of the Rebel Alliance is being developed for a May 2018 release with Christopher Miller and Phil Lord taking the helm.
The duo is the brilliant minds behind the "Jump Street" films and "The Lego Movie." In a press release picked up by Deadline, the directors shared how getting the chance to take the reins on something as big as this "Star Wars" Han Solo film made their dreams come true.
"This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," Miller and Lord was quoted saying.
"This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you're late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you've loved since before you can remember having dreams at all," they add.
With Miller and Lord directing the "Star Wars" Han Solo epic, IGN reports that the duo may have to let go of their other commitments (there are a lot of them) to clear their schedule. The "Flash" film for Warner Bros, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is now beyond consideration.
The site added that it looks like they have to pass on a third "Jump Street" flick too. The two may end up writing and producing these two movies instead of directing them. However, the planned animated "Spider-Man" series for Sony, where they will serve as writers and producers, will likely be less impacted.
Father and son, Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, who are excited to work with the directors for the movie centered on who they described, as quoted by Variety, as "one of the coolest characters in the galaxy."
The older Kasdan is very familiar with "Star Wars" having penned "The Empire Strikes Back," "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens." As for Jon, his screenwriting credits include "The First Time," "Freaks and Geeks" and "Dawson's Creek."
Lucasfilm President, Kathleen Kennedy, will be producing the Han Solo origin film and is excited about having the "perfect team to handle the task."
"Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story," she said, as quoted in the Star Wars website.
The Han Solo film is slated to release May 25, 2018.
