Actress Mayim Bialik, who is known for her portrayal of a young Bette Midler in the movie "Beaches" and currently has a recurring role on the hit sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," has published a book on attachment parenting titled "Beyond the Sling."
The book, which was published by Simon & Schuster imprint Touchstone, goes into topics such as breastfeeding, co-sleeping and gentle discipline, according to the book's website.
Bialik, who has a PhD in neuroscience and two sons with husband Michael Stone, wrote about her book in a posting for the parenting website Kveller.com, for which she writes regularly.
She wrote that attachment parenting comes in many different forms.
"Attachment Parenting is an umbrella term that more describes a parenting philosophy than a checklist of membership identifications," Bialik wrote. "I know AP parents with adopted children who they never breastfed or slept with from infancy. I know AP moms who fed their babies bottles after starting chemotherapy for cancer. I know AP moms and dads who simply did not want to sleep with a kicking squirmy kid, so they didn't. I know AP parents who don't homeschool, don't practice Elimination Communication, hate vegan food, and are grumpy. We come in all shapes and sizes and flavors!"
She also spoke about her and her husband's parenting style with Good Morning America.
"They were rarely put down," Bialik said of her own two kids.
She added that she and her husband stayed home for the first 40 days of each of their children's lives.
"You are surrendering your sense of autonomy before you had children to an entirely new identity that will never look like it did before you had kids," Bialik said of attachment parenting.
"Beyond the Sling" is available in bookstores.
