Fans of Robin in the Batman series are in for an unpleasant surprise, as DC Comics has killed their favorite character in the latest release of the series.

DC Comics made a controversial decision in their latest Batman comic, where they decided to kill the character of Batman's loyal sidekick Robin. The eighth issue of the "Batman Incorporated" series will see Robin die in battle.

"He saves the world. He does his job as Robin," writer Grant Morrison told the New York Post. "He dies an absolute hero."

According to the writer, Robin gets killed while fighting an assassin cloned from his own genetic material. Batman doesn't arrive on time to kill him and reportedly, this will affect the whole DC Comics universe.

"It's all about the family and the family going to hell," said Morrison. "The two adults in the story are both culpable. The kid's the good guy."

Damian Wayne, the illegitimate son of Bruce Wayne and Talia, daughter of Batman's enemy Ra's al Ghul, was reintroduced to the Batman story arc by Morrison in 2006. Wayne has been playing the role of Robin in the series ever since. "What we did was turn this little monster into a superhero. He's a little brat, but he's a super-brat," Morrison told the New York Post.

According to a report by The Guardian, Damian is not the first Robin to die. Previously, Dick Grayson's replacement, Jason Todd, was killed by the Joker, but later brought back to life in 2005. "You can never say never in a comic book ... Batman will ultimately always have a partner," Morrison said.

"The series has been Damian's story as much as it has been the story of Bruce Wayne, and it's a story that had its end planned a long time ago - for what son could ever hope to replace a father like Batman, who never dies? And so, via Batman, Batman and Robin, Return of Bruce Wayne and Batman Inc this epic tale has finally reached its finale," Morrison said in a blog
