After hefty festive discounts, Amazon is now offering a $50 discount on their 8.9 Kindle Fire HD for students that are Amazon Student Prime members.

With the end of the festive season and the beginning of a new year with students returning to colleges and schools, Amazon is offering a student's discount for the month of January. All students that are a member of Amazon Student Prime can now pick up Amazon's 8.9 Kindle Fire HD for $50 less.

Those who are not members yet, can subscribe for membership with a 6 months free trail and after that the subscription fee is $39 a year. All a student needs to do is register on the website with their ".edu" email address and can enjoy free membership for 6 months.

The offer is valid on the Wi-Fi and 4G LTE versions of the Kindle Fire device. After the discount the price of the 16 GB Wi-Fi only devices comes down to $249 which is as much as the 7-inch 32GB model Kindle Fire HD, reports PCMag.

The 8.9 Kindle Fire HD is available in four different models, each having a different memory/storage size. The Wi-Fi only model come with a 16GB and 32 GB storage space and is priced at $249 and $319 respectively after applying the discount.

The 4G LTE versions are available with 32 GB and 64 GB storage space and are priced $449 and $549 after applying the new student discount.

A recent survey conducted by a research firm Gfk, found that 24 percent of the 3000 who took part in the survey stated the Kindle Fire HD to be their preferred tablet for the holiday season.

"With the launch of the iPad 3 in March and the buzz which followed, it is really interesting to learn that the Kindle Fire is the leading tablet this festive season. Tablets are becoming an intrinsic part of the household but price is a key factor as people look to buy cheaper models to save money," says Media research and insight director at GfK Julia Lamaison in a report by PCMag.
