More of RL Stine's legendary tales of horror and mystery are getting Hollywood's well-deserved attention. The author's teenage horror series titled "Fear Street," whose first book was published back in 1989, is being adapted as a movie by 20th Century Fox.
"Fear Street" is one of Stine's most notable horror sagas. According to Vulture, there are already 100 million copies from the series sold. Some of the titles continue to top the bestsellers' list too. Considering its success, "Fear Street" is simply a big blockbuster hit waiting to happen.
Not much is known about the film. When asked about the development, Stine simply told The Wrap, "I'm not allowed to say, but yeah, there's something happening. I'm usually a loose cannon but they really didn't want me to talk about it."
There are over 100 titles to choose from but it is unclear what 20th Century Fox's approach will be storytelling-wise and how they plan to translate these books into one giant film. Interestingly, the abundance of the "Fear Street" titles makes Vulture hope that it is better off a TV series than a film.
For the uninitiated, "Fear Street" chronicles the adventures of average teenagers in the story bound city of Shadyside. These exploits often involve the arcane and wicked. As The Wrap points out, the stories often borrow paranormal elements from the author's "Goosebumps" series.
But readers would agree that murder mystery is often the common theme in "Fear Street" books. As per the aforementioned site, there is "more violence" in the books as compared to Stine's more kid-friendly book series "Goosebumps."
Speaking of which, a movie based on Stine's "Goosebumps" horror saga is set to release on Oct. 16. The film stars Jack Black as the author himself in an quest to save the town after the monsters in his books were brought to life and are now wreaking havoc.
Going back to "Fear Street," the first book ever published for the franchise is "New Girl," which was released in 1989. From this book to the "Lost Girl," "Fear Street" consists of a whopping 100 titles. Stine penned these books before "Goosebumps," which he started in 1992.
As per Biography.com, the literary phenomenon that is his book series catapulted Stine to his status as one of the most accomplished and successful children's book writer of all time.
