A live-action TV series adaptation of the widely popular manga series "Death Note" is going international in less than a week. Crunchyroll will simulcast the show when it premieres on July 8 at 7:30 pm PT to those subscribed to the streaming site.
Members of the site who live in the US, UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, the Netherlands, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, Europe (except for Italian-speaking regions), the Middle East, and North Africa will all be able to tune in.
Those who want to be able to watch the series but aren't Crunchyroll members can sign up for the Crunchyroll anime streaming program from its registration site. The subscription costs $6.95 a month, and interested anime lovers can register for a two-week trial of the premium membership as well.
Days before the "Death Note" live-action series hits the shores, Nihon TV posted a synopsis (in Japanese) for the episode to give fans an idea of what the manga-turned-drama has in store for long-time aficionados of the story that Tsugumi Ohba created back in 2003.
Crunchyroll points out that the live-action series will be a significant departure from its source material and the live-action films that stayed faithful to the story. In the show, protagonist Light Yagami (portrayed by Masataka Kubota) is an ordinary university student, who lives under the same roof with his father, Soichiro, and sister, Sayu.
The site adds that Light is laser-focused on his school and his part-time job, but still finds time to go to live concerts of the idol group, Ichigo Berry, who Misa Amane is a part of. In the manga, Misa was a huge fan of Light, but it looks like the "Death Note" live-action now has the latter going giddy over the former.
In the manga, as Comic Book Resources pointed out, Light was a high school genius whose lackluster life becomes electrifying when he finds a supernatural notebook that kill any human whose name is listed on its pages. It was previously owned by a death god named Shinigami.
Light uses the notebook to eliminate the evil and sets out to become a vigilante, killing criminals one by one. The dealings caught the attention of the police, and this is where Light crosses paths with a detective expert named L (Kento Yamazaki), who is enlisted by the authorities to find and stop the killer.
"Death Note" live-action will kick off with a 90-minute pilot episode, which Crunchyroll will stream at 7:30 pm PT. Meanwhile, Fandompost revealed that Viz Media will be preparing a "Death Note" Blu-ray release in the future. Whether it will be for the anime or the live-action manga, there aren't concrete details yet.
