Alexis Hall returns with her latest novel, "For Real," the third book of the Spires series set in Oxford. The book will be released on June 11. Each book in the series, including "Glitterland" and "Waiting for the Flood," explores themes of connection and place.

The Spires Series

Hall writes on her page that each book in the Spires series stands alone, but following the publication order - "Glitterland," "Waiting for the Flood," "For Real," and "Pansies" - is advisable for coherence. Despite each story's independence, reading them in order ensures convenience and a fuller understanding of the interconnected narrative.

Notably, "For Real" precedes "Waiting for the Flood" chronologically, while "Pansies" unfolds concurrently with "Glitterland," providing a cohesive reading experience across the series.

Navigating Desire and Vulnerability

"For Real" introduces Laurence Dalziel, weary at 40, who finds rejuvenation in Toby Finch, a younger, vibrant presence. Their passionate connection poses a dilemma: Toby wants Laurie physically, but Laurie fears emotional fallout. Hall's narrative delves into the complexities of relationships against Oxford's backdrop, offering a tale of desire, vulnerability, and the uncertainties of lasting love. This installment, like its predecessors, promises freshness and timeless resonance.

In an excerpt obtained by PEOPLE, Laurence wrestles with conflicting emotions as he tends to a vulnerable yet mischievous young man named Toby. Laurence struggles with the temptation to offer comfort while maintaining boundaries, feeling both drawn to and repelled by Toby's antics.

As Toby takes a bath, their banter oscillates between playful flirtation and moments of intense vulnerability, blurring the lines of their relationship. Despite Laurence's attempts to resist Toby's charm, he finds himself increasingly captivated by the enigmatic young man, ultimately surrendering to his requests and revealing his name as Toby affectionately dubs him "Laurie."

Author's Insights: The Evolution of Romance Norms

Speaking to Cosmopolitan Magazine, Hall expressed excitement about the upcoming release of "For Real," noting the opportunity to connect with a new generation of readers. However, they humorously acknowledged the potential for being known as "that one who writes about lemon meringue pie and anal hooks," emphasizing that such themes are not as significant as they may seem.

Hall shared that "For Real" is the steamiest installment in the Spires series, though they expressed reservations about the term "steamy." They noted the evolving expectations of m/m romance and their intention to navigate those norms authentically while staying true to their comfort level. With nearly a decade since its initial release, there is anticipation for how contemporary audiences will receive the book, given the significant shifts in romance literature.

Hall expressed gratitude for the expanding LGBTQ+ fiction audience and emphasized the genre's diversity. Whether returning to the Spires world or discovering it anew, readers are encouraged to explore the complexities of "For Real."

"For Real" is now available for pre-order wherever books are sold. Sourcebooks Casablanca will release the book. Whether revisiting the Spires world or embarking on a new literary adventure, readers will find intrigue and resonance in this upcoming release.
